It’s so great to be able to work together
with you as partners in your child’s education this year. We are looking forward to creating lots of learning
opportunities for your child and to work alongside you to promote a high
standard of achievement. This year your
child will be involved in many learning experiences that are designed to
develop their capabilities, promote team work and generate enthusiasm and the
desire to explore the world around us.
To start
off there are several things we need you to be aware of, so please read through
this information sheet carefully. Get
back to us if you have any questions or concerns.
Dropping off / picking up children – The
classroom will be open to receive children from 8:30am each morning. We expect the children to be at school by
8:45am, settled and ready to start the day when the bell goes at 8:55am. To promote independence, we would like your
child to hang up their own school bag, organize themselves for the day which
includes putting their book-bags, Readers and library books in the right
places. School
finishes at 3pm. Please wait quietly for
your child on the courtyard area outside the classroom. For safety reasons we only release children
to their parents. If someone other than
you will be collecting your child please inform us beforehand.
Reading – Your child will be taking a
Reader home in their book-bag Monday through Thursday. Please allow your child to read it to as many
people as possible. Encourage your child
to point under each word as they read.
It is perfectly fine for them to use the pictures as prompts but at this
stage we would encourage them to check the beginning sounds of words and to
attempt them before using the picture.
Please initial your child’s notebook and leave a comment about how they
did. Feel free to write a message in the
notebook if you wish to ask us something.
Children will bring their Poem Book home each Friday so they can read it
to you. Return Poem Books to school on
Mondays please.
Book-bags – Check your child’s book-bag each
night for notices.
Spare clothes – Sometimes accidents
happen, so please send a change of clothes, including underwear, to school in a
named plastic bag in your child’s school bag.
Class blog – Stories and photos showing the
children’s learning will be updated on our blog weekly. Please visit us there often! We will use your child’s first name and photos
of them on the blog. Let us know if you
have any concerns about that. Our blog
address is: http://arahoelearners.blogspot.co.nz/
Absences – If your child is unable to attend
school, please phone the school office or email one of the teachers to let us
know. You are required to inform the
principal in writing if you plan to take your child out of school for family
holidays during term time.
Toys – Children are not to bring toys or
valuables to school as they can be easily lost or broken.
Food & Drinks – Please
send healthy food in your child’s lunchbox for morning tea and lunch and make
sure they have a named water bottle as well.
We will ensure your child eats their sandwiches and fruit first. Please do not send fizzy drinks or lollies to
school with your child. All food wrappers
will be sent home to be disposed of.
Morning tea 10:10 –
10:30am
Lunch time 11:50am
– 12:45pm
Swimming – All children are expected to
participate in swimming lessons during Terms 1 and 4. If your child is unable to swim please send a
signed note to school explaining the situation.
School website – Check the school website
regularly to be informed of what is happening school-wide. The best way to be
informed is to sign up for the school newsletter on the school website. Room 19 is part of the Ara Teina syndicate
(Year 0-2 classes). Become familiar with
the Ara Teina links that provide your child with interactive activities to do
at home.
Sight Words Sticker Book – Each
child has been given a little book of words on a ring and is expected to learn
letter sounds and words at home. Please
support them in this.
Personal Property – Please
ensure that ALL your child’s clothing and property are clearly named. If your child loses something search the Lost
Property bin located down the hallway beside the Library.
Library – Children are allowed to borrow
one book for up to a week. Children can
return and borrow books as they wish. The
Library is open at lunchtime. Lost and
damaged books will have to be paid for, so please look after them
carefully. Return library books to the returns
box in the Library foyer.
Our Library
day is Wednesday, but this may change later in the term due to a permanent spot opening up.
